Free memberships are still available for Club Penguin, although paid memberships allow players to access a range of additional features.
Club Penguin is a multiplayer online role-playing game involving a virtual world which contains online games and activities. Players use cartoon penguin-avatars to play in a world with a winter theme.
It was launched in 2004 and has expanded to an online community of more than 12 million. Its success led to developers New Horizon being purchased by The Walt Disney Company in August 2007 for $350 million dollars.
The game was designed for ages 6-14. Each player is provided with an igloo for a home. Members then have the option of opening their igloo so other penguins can access it. Members may also purchase larger igloos and decorate them with items bought with virtual coins earned by playing mini-games.
At least one party per month is held on Club Penguin. Both free and paid-for members are invited.
The Town is the main Club Penguin room where most players arrive when they log in to the game.
There is also a Coffee Shop where a mini-game called Bean Counters is hosted. Players have to catch sacks of coffee beans launched from a truck. It's the place a lot of penguins go to meet each other.
There is also the Library where penguins can go to read interactive books.
The Stage was released in November 2007 and here paid-for members can buy costumes for a play. New plays are released every month on the site.
There has been some criticism of Club Penguin even though strict safeguards are in place to protect children from coming in to contact with unsavoury characters on the Internet. These criticisms have mainly been about teaching youngsters about consumerism.
