Like any online website/application, it is never 100% safe but there are many aspects which make Skype video chat safer than most chat software.

First of all, to 'call' a user on Skype, you first need to add them as a contact or friend as you would on MSN messenger or Facebook. You then need to actually click on their name to start video chatting with them.

This means that Skype video chat is as safe as the person using it. If you are the type of person to add anyone and everyone then it would not necessarily be a safe way of talking online. However, if you only add and talk to people you actually know rather than just through the Internet then it is a pretty safe way of chatting.

The added bonus to the software is, that like MSN Messenger, if you find that one of the users is not who you thought they were or are being abusive then you can simply block them, thus eliminating them from seeing any of your information and visa versa.

If you want to have a thoroughly safe video chat on Skype then just be careful who you add and avoid clicking on any pop ups that appear whilst signed in as they could have unwanted spam/viruses attached to them.

Skype is supported by the Microsoft Windows XP and Macintosh operating systems. The video conferencing facility is possible on the Skype 2.0 version. It is a cross-platform video conferencing solution between Microsoft Windows XP and Macintosh. It is possible to have private chat sessions as it only supports one-to-one chat. The maximum number of people that can participate in a chat on Skype is three.

However, the critics of Skype have raised some concern about the safety of Skype. The reason why Skype is sometimes considered to be unsafe is because the proprietary protocol is designed in such a way that if the users of Skype are given access to an unrestricted network connection, the clients of Skype could become super nodes, which hold the peer-to-peer network together. Some clients could find themselves behind a restrictive firewall. However, Skype clients are satisfied with the Internet telephony services and the facilities which are offered by the Skype network.
