Below the barcode is there a number or some combination of numbers and letters? If so, write them down on a separate peice of paper. Go to google and download the 3 of 9 font (typical barcode font) and install it. Then open up MS WORD and type in the number/letter combination but change the last number or letter to the next one in rotation so like if it is 12345 make the new one 12346. Highlight it and change your font to 3 of 9, now you have a new barcode for the ink, tape it on and see if that works, JUST MY $.02

Good luck

Nice try but I cant get the bar code small enough so the lexmark will read it. The smallest font size is still too big so will have to think of a way to shrink it down to size and then it may work.

Idea!!!  Start a Barter/ Trade of the cartridges in your area (ie. A craigslist.org listing).  You can trade them with others and refill them and then trade again as needed.  That's what we have done.

Thanks for that but I think I did not make the question very clear. The thing is that I have refilled the cartridges with ink but because the bar code on the cartridge has not changed the printer software keeps telling me I need more ink (Based on what I don’t know but some sneaky software no doubt that Lexmark has installed to make refills impossible!). I have tried blocking the code on the cartridge with tape as suggested on one blog but this has not really worked and I wondered if anyone has another way of tricking the printer into thinking that it is a new cartridge, as it is very expensive (and wasteful) to use a new one. This is something they don’t tell you when buy the printer and it really annoys me!

No! You cannot override this, you just have to refill the toner, and check the tray should be properly adjusted in the lower part of the printer.
