‘First select to ‘switch user.’ Type any word, number or what you suspect is the password. An incorrect password will provide a message that says ‘password incorrect’. There will also be an OK button to hit. Luckily, if you type a wrong password Windows Vista will prompt with a hint. If you do not remember after the hint you can select to reset the password.

The hint is clearly displayed on the log in page. It will be the hint you supplied for the password, so if you can remember the hint you should be able to log in. If you do not remember the hint it will be time to change the password. Windows Vista will give you prompts in how to reset the password.

Unfortunately, this is where things get a little tough. If you select reset password you will be shown a Windows Help Wizard Window. This wizard will tell you that you can only reset the password if you have created a password reset disc. If you click next you will see a new screen. This screen asks you to choose the location of the password reset disc. It will call it a key disc drive. Usually only an external drive will show up or if you insert a disc it will appear in the disc drive.

If you have failed to create this disc you will be unable to reset the password or unlock the computer. At this juncture it will be best to seek a professional who deals in computers. They may have suggestions or be able to work on a different pathway to get around the password blocking entry. Even in safe mode you have to enter your password, which means you need to figure out what it is or seek a professional if the above does not work.

I have  downloaded Windows Password Recovery Tool 3.0.
It not only supports XP, 2000, and NT, I have personally tested it with Vista and Windows 7. It works perfectly to reset any local user account to a blank password.
I Wrote it to an old 128mb USB flash drive do this. Booting up and clearing a password takes a minute or two works like a charm. It supports cd/dvd too.

Hey guys I got a better one for you....

Go here -->   home.eunet.no

it's called 'Offline NT Password & Registry Editor'. You can download the file and then copy it to a CD to put into your pc that you can't get into. After you do this, there is a walk-through after you download and it helped me very much. The best part = THE ACTUAL PROGRAM IS FREE!!! = NO TRIAL!!! XD  The only real complication is if you have encrypted files. The creator says that you won't be able to use them until you remember your password. But my stuff works still! XD Good luck!

You need your password reset disk. If you don't have a password reset disk or another administrator account, you won't be able to reset the password. If there are no other user accounts on the computer, you won't be able to log on to Windows. In this case, you will need to re-install Windows

I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM MANY TIMES AND SO I RESEARCHED THE SOLUTION AND CAME UP WITH "SPOTMAU POWER SUITE 2009"  I RECOMMEND IT HIGHLY.. LOOK FOR IT ON THE WEB : www.spotmaupowersuite.com    this will allow you to make a new administrator to your laptop and then you can enter your old one and make a new password.  I originally bought it for my desktop because I couldn't get into either of the users due to poor fatigued memory in passwords. It's an xp operating system. I can't get it to work for it, but its a dream for vista.  Good luck and enjoy.  It does so much else also, by the way
