Should I get a Chromebook or an older Macbook Air? I like XCode but also like some of the features that the Chromebook has built into it. I will be mostly using it for homework, but also need some computing power.

Chromebooks are nice if you want to do basic things like documents/spreadsheets (online or offline).. a basic photo editing app called Pixlr TouchUp.. Online games (and some available offline), browse the web, there is even a web version of Skype available now for Chromebooks.

i own a toshiba Chromebook 2 and it has a good keyboard (comparable to a mac), decent speakers, and nice screen.

all your homework, documents, and even photos etc.. are stored in your google drive account so you won't lose them.

use a Chromebook offline,

i've been using chromebooks since 2012.  and thats all i need. but as for you. if you need a computer to do more than what i said.. go with the macbook.

PS.. you can also install ubuntu alongside of Chrome OS but it can be somewhat time consuming and lots of instructions.

EDIT, chromebooks will soon run apps from the google play store so doing stuff offline will be easier.

Just Saturday evening my daughter (24) and I went to Best Buy.  She'd been saving for a new laptop.  Unbeknownst to her I planned to add some money to her purchase so she could get a really good one. She's a writer and uses her laptop constantly.  We looked at everything. I have a MacBook Air and knew she didn't want a Mac so we didn't even go over to them.  Next thing I know, she's looking at a Mac. I kept saying "really?"  Then we went and looked again at the others. She ended up going back to the MacBook Air. They had an "open box" Mac so we saved a bit extra.  Even though she always said she's just not a Mac person, turns out she loves her Mac!!!
