Is GTA safe for under 18s? My teenage son wants me to pre-order the game for him but I have so far refused. Was I correct in doing so?

GTA series is one of the best gaming series (if not the best ever). Games are safe for everyone because they are just that games. I can say that the crime rates are roughly the same now as they were before the ESRB rating was introduced and that is only because games don't influence people do do crime. If anything they teach them not to do crime because you are usually playing as the good guy.

I can say ( having played all the GTA games from the first part and I was 10 when the first part was introduced , before ESRB) that the story behind every one of those games is awesome. There zillions of movies that have a stupid story and killing in it and the graphic of violence in them is the only awesome thing.

People start doing crime because they're poor and uneducated so they have no other way to make money.
In the last series of GTA your cousin gets killed and it is so sad that you
could almost cry and you die so many times in the game to learn that the crime doesn't pay :D
If anything GTA teaches you that the world is not good or bad and that your actions impact what will happen. Remember in almost all games you kill people for the sake of killing them and there is no story behind it (Gears of War ,Call of Duty , Quake and so on).

The bottom line is GTA is like a good crime movie in which you choose how things will work out and after that there is no turning back. All of my friend have played GTA and have not killed anyone , robbed any stores or anything like that.

It is my opinion that you should let your kid play GTA if he is over 14 and able to recognize good from bad and you can always leverage the game to your advantage ( first homework than playing and so on).

I believe that GTA teaches you more than bad movies like Spiderman or Transformers and should be played by... ow.ly/oOOgw .

it does contain bad language and violence though, and after hearing my nephew saying that he enjoyed killing women in red dead dead redemption, it was a bit disturbing. Although kids may not commit crimes after playing games, it may encourage them to swear and have strange ideas and attitudes...

She said she has a teenage son. I believe that he has been exposed to bad language and almost every movie there is at least one or more people that swear.

Everyone enjoys doing stuff in games that they can't do in real life. That's what games are for.

Thank you Kass.

Well, let's examine what the average GTA gameplay involves:

You get to rob banks.

Let's say you need to take a taxi... Rather than paying the fare at the end, in the world of GTA it is common practice to assault and rob the driver, before escaping with his vehicle.

And not only can you visit strip-bars

But you can also arrange for private dances if you feel like getting to know the performers better...

But why bother with that when there are usually hookers in the vicinity of the stripclub anyway?

And you don't even need to pay them for their services - just bludgeon them to death with a baseball bat in a dark alley...

But if baseball bats are too messy, you can always purchase a weapon from the local gun store

But those weapons aren't cheap, so you'll need to get a job helping out a local businessman...

Ok so I know all the stuff above sounds terrible and not the kind of thing anyone of any age should be playing for fun, the game does have some lighter parts too:

You get to make lots of friends.

Drive amazing cars

And other vehicles

And once you start going up in the world, you can rent out some very nice apartments

And visit some really trendy bars, restaurants and other places to unwind in.

There are views to soak up

And you can even go out on romantic dates

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that the game portrays some very questionable things, but it is also a lot of fun to play.

You need to decide whether your son is going to struggle to tell the difference between what is safe and appropriate in real life, and what he can get away with in a console game.

But also, how much will this game influence his attitude and personality?

Young people are impressionable, and GTA certainly glamorizes gang violence, drugs, sex and the excitement that goes with that kind of lifestyle...

If your son is wise enough to realize that real-life is very different, that you don't respawn after being shot dead by police snipers, or a stay in jail lasts more than a few seconds - then he should be ok, but then again... Maybe age restrictions are put in place for a reason.

I must point out that there is no proven correlation between video games and violence , also I must say that there have been reported killings of World of Warcraft players because of the in game item dispute and that game has an ESRB rating of 10+.
As a passionate gamer and a person that has worked for ESL , WCG , a member of the HCL Croatian gaming community ( one of the first members ) I firmly believe that video games have less effect on peoples behavior than a Rambo or a Rocky movie.

Yeah I'm not sure how much effect games, movies or even music have on people.... I play GTA and I haven't run over any prostitutes yet.

But i guess the danger with anything that glamorizes something negative like murder, drug dealing etc.. is that some people out there are so easily influenced that they actually go out and do this stuff in real life.

I think the real solution is education and upbringing more than anything else. If you bring up your kids to be rational and have common sense, they'll be able to tell the difference between real life and an xbox...

But I guess for some people it's just safer to block any influence at all. Maybe it's just a decision each individual parent needs to make... they know their kids better than anyone else after all!

I agree. Every parent has to make that decision for themselves. We all have to keep in mind that people get exposed to bad stuff in life (drugs and prostitutes) and most of us don't end up criminals. If your kid is a normal person and is raised correctly ( and in this case I believe he was) that there should be no problem with him playing GTA :)

Yes, it's safe for teenagers. GTA game is one of the most popular games and all age of people can play this game because it's basically a game. I also started GTA 5 game at the age of 18 and playing this game up to now. Yes, it contains bad language in some places but it doesn't affect teenagers if they treat this as a game. If you want to know about this game in details then just take a look at GTA 5 modded. Here you will know all about this game with pictures and description.
