Sounds like it may be slot 1 that has gone bad. Get a magnifying glass and look to see if any pins were bent when you installed the new memory. Also, it may be that one memory card is required in slot one and the other in slot 2. You can go back to your original set up and if beep symptom, try switching them. Same with the new memory but usually it should not do the beep error. Maybe the memory is not the correct speed or size for the machine and it will not accept it.
I got the beep error 2 months ago. I changed my ram and everything got well. It seems that your slot 1 is not accepting any ram. Use 512 mb ram in slot 2.
I don't think its a Ram problem. And you can't change the slot 1, so better go along with slot 2 as long as you got your laptop. Nowadays, even 1 gb ram is available for single slot.
