I have one of these things from my dad. I also had no idea how to operate it. It looks like a closed up case. But there is a lid on the top that is difficult to open. If you open it (slide it back and up) inside are the instructions and numbers to press to program it with. There is no readout, so it is just follow the instructions, enter the frequencies, verify the entry and sit back and, hopefully, listen. Good luck!
