A friend of mine had that problem, and after he cleaned the cigarette tar off the fan it worked fine, but The answer is right an old computer running new software runs hot.

It does have new video software installed. It may be running something in the background. I may go the route -like you said-and blow some compressed air at the fan wHich may be clogged up. Thanks

Maybe your computer is overheating.  Do you have it plugged right into the wall?  It should be plugged into an adapter thing that plugs into the wall that you can turn on and off.  I can't remember what they are called right off hand.  I would check into this and do this if you have not already.  Maybe unplug the computer and try it again later.  Or you may have to call a technician if you can't find anything else here to help you.  Maybe they can suggest something you can try without having someone have to look at it.  If it us under warranty then I would get it looked at anyways.  Good luck.

The first suspect is the overheating..you're right. Getting great answers for specific problems via Gateways websitethough is not so easy....esp with this special Intel 915 chipset. I actually had to go to Intel to get some of my answers. The model is Gateway a 554GE. It's presently plugged into a surge/battery backup strip-but so are other things. There's a rare chance I'm shy a few volts but I don't think so.

It is either overheating or has dust on the fans.-Iamlegend

Well, usually when it is on high it is working hard so another question from me would be how old is it because old computer with new software is hard on the computer

Good answer. Only a couple years old and 3.2Ghz with 2GB RAM. It's made for the job at hand. Next to a turn key model it's pretty fast. I clicked on task mgr and it was around 50%. I looked at the processes and only Explorer and some system files were eating up resources. I'm actually surprised to see it working at 50% idling-I don't know if that's normal or not.??
