EBay, the world's most famous online auctioneers, began on September 4, 1995 in San Jose, California. The first 'office' of eBay was the living room in the residence of the man who founded the website, Pierre Omidyar. The 39-year-old Omidyar, born on June 21, 1967, is an American computer programmer of Iranian and French descent. EBay started off as a part of a large personal website created by Omidyar himself. It was formerly known as Auction Web, and included a cheeky tribute to the Ebola virus, written by Omidyar himself. One of the first items to be sold on EBay was a broken laser printer belonging to the site's founder himself, which went for $13.83. It is an interesting (and confirmed) story that EBay was formed to help Omidyar's fiancée buy and sell PEZ candy dispersers. Chris Agarpao was the first employee to be hired at eBay and Jeff Skoll was the first man to serve as the president of the company in 1996.
