- The full form of internet
'Internet' is the shortened form of 'Inter-network' and is often shortened even further to 'the net'. It may also be called 'The World Wide Web' or 'the web'.
The Internet is a global network of computers and a potentially infinite resource of information. Development of the Internet began in the 50s, although it didn't become commercialized until the 80s. By the late 90s, most families were beginning to have the Internet in their homes and by 2000 it was an essential part of our lives. The Internet has changed the world we live in and altered our culture forever.
Most people will now believe that it would be difficult to live without the Internet as it aids our everyday lives to such an extent that we cannot imagine a world without it. Our lives have changed enormously in both the work place and in our personal lives.
- The use of the Internet in our homes
The Internet was primarily used in a work environment when it was initially set up, but it was not long before almost every household had access to the Internet. It is now an essential source of communication as we use email, instant messaging and social networking sites to communicate with people almost 24/7. With the use of programs such as Skype it is now much easier to communicate with people on the other side of the world, this used to be an expensive and difficult process.
Social networking means we are communicating constantly and can always be in touch with friends and family and even connecting with people we do not know but share similar interests with. Online shopping means that we can buy virtually anything online from anywhere in the world and need never leave our homes. Many people can now work from home as they use the internet to communicate with colleagues.
