USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. The USB port is an interface used to connect external peripherals. Using a USB port, we can do the communication between the external peripherals and the computer.

The advantages of USB to other ports are the following.

1. USB devices are not required to restart or shut down the computer to install or eject. e.g The flash drive. We can connect or eject the flash drive even the computer is powered on.

2. We can use 127 devices using a single USB port. If we can have a USB hub installed then we can add printer, mouse, keyboard, flash driver, digital camera, joystick, scanner, telephony devices, card reader, modem on the same USB port.

The data transfer rate of UBS port is slower. It transfers data only at 12 MBPS. But the version 2 of the USB supports higher data transfer speed.

All new brands of the computers come normally with two USB ports. It was first used in 1996 and windows 98 start supporting the use of USB for the first time.

Now a days, most portable device come with USB for the data transfer. Cell phones, PDAs, IPOD are supports the usage of USB.

USB stands for Universal Serial Bus - as the name indicates, USB uses a similar protocol to the older serial technology (RS-232) that is still common on many devices today. USB is a lot faster than serial (and more reliable, plug-n-play, etc.), but it is more of just an advancement of the earlier technology.

Since the technologies are so closely related you can actually buy adapters that will give you a true conversion from USB to serial (since many new computers don't come with serial ports if you want to use a serial device this is necessary).
