Pressure mat alarms work by setting of a domestic or remote alarm when pressure is applied to the mat. In these devices the application of more than a particular miniscule amount of pressure completes a connection or circuit and sounds the alarm. The advantage of these alarms is that they are extremely discreet and once activated are very difficult to circumvent unless deactivated.

Any change in pressure such as moving them or removing their covering can let the alarm sound. They are used as a security device where the risk of intrusion is high. These mats are mostly light weight weighing no more than a pound and are just 10mm thick. The typical places they are used is under carpeting in sensitive areas of premises such as door ways and windows.
