You are trying to get to the dock, located in the south-west part of town, so that you can take the ferry. You will first cross the bridge, go down and then arrive at the docks. After talking to the sailor on the dock, you will be put onto the boat which will transport you to the island can earn a rare egg. This is the only way to reach Iron Island.
While traveling to Iron Island, only take five Pokemon, as you want to have room for the egg. This egg will hatch into a rare Pokemon, which will round out Sinnoh Pokedex. There are many other optional adventures available to you, of which Iron Island is only one example.
