How do escape lanes work? Is it just about, like, friction or is it about stopping/reaction time too, or?

If you mean the ones for trucks going downhill ... They work on a couple different levels.

1 - they are supposed to have loose gravel or sand which the truck tires sink into, providing resistance

2 - they are supposed to be angled upwards, allowing gravity to also work against the momentum of the truck
