Avast or AVG are both good. Can't go wrong with either one.. Both Macafee and Norton are trash.
(Only inexperienced computer buyers get sucked into buying these brands when Best Buy offers it to them with their new computer)

You're right about all the well-known ones. Norton is trash. Mcafee is what your ancient grandpa would run as he logs on to his AOL account. If you're a terrible computer user, I suggest Avast. Though it isn't as good as it used to be, it's still pretty solid.. Nod32 is also great for a paid version, as it performs pretty fast and doesn't use that much of your computer's resources. That is, if you MUST have one.
As for the normal person, Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes are all you really need.
