When trying to learn a computer programming language (like Java, Matlab, Python, R, C++, Fortran, etc.) for the first time, I'd start with a free one first because 1) there are plenty of free resources out there and 2) if you decide that this language isn't your thing, you didn't spend any money on it. I personally do not have any specific recommendations as to which to use because I don't know Java. However since Java is one of the more commonly used languages, I'm certain that you'll find something to help you out!
