Is it difficult to build trust and loyalty selling over the Internet?

No.  If you sell as a person on Ebay, You just have to been reliable and send out the product promptly so it gets to the buyer quickly and communicate, communicate, communicate. 

If you are selling online as a business, it is essential to bulid that trust and loyality online.  You have to set up a understandable and quick and easy online buying method and shop.  Use Secure payment methods including a PayPal option and  have customer accounts so that they can have a wish list and have all their personal detailed saved.  The shop needs to be easy to navigate and easy to put into the basket so to speak and to admend the basket so that the customer can decide if they want something else or to cancel an order or decrease or increase an order.  Shipping needs to be prompt and accurate and it needs to get to the customer as quickly as possible and as securely as possible.  A Web Designer etc will be able to set up an efficent customer-friendly shop with a good and efficient checkout.  It is also worth considering new tools like Phone Apps etc....and using the mobile phone to pay for goods....I think there are bodies you have to register with to make sure your website is secure to handle online transactions online and secure payment methods etc..

If you are selling as a business on Amazon and Ebay you bulid up your repitation with your efficency and reliablity and the quality of your products and the length of time it takes be shipped and arrive at the customers home in one piece.  Fast, efficient service and good shipping packaging is needed.  They will review your service and so you need to make sure that you provide a quick dispatch and First Class postage or Next Day Delivery.   Advertise advertise and advertise and communicate well.  Provide a printed delivery slip with all the details and a returns form.  If your provide good service and good products and that packaged for shipping well (so it doesn't break etc) etc etc....then hopefully you will slowly bulid a rep for good products and service.....

So in a way it is there is quite alot to it online sales especially if you are a business and there is alot to consider.  Its all in the preparation when it comes to retail.  Once you get the payment and shipping methods and procedure right and it is efficent then there will not be any problems with buliding that trust and loyality.  It is easier to do so, if you are selling or reselling as an indivdual on ebay and amazon as you dont need to worry about tax or setting up shops etc.....(you can resell books on amazon and they sell your second hands on for you)  Ebay you just have to get your selling right and listed correctly.  It is more difficult for a businesss start-up and they are trying out their shop for the first time and their shipping methods and procedures....
