Here's a list of some eBay alternatives that might be worth checking out:

Auction.com - No fee to list, but they charge to make your listing more prominent on the site.

Bidtopia.com - This is a great place for $0.99 auctions

Bonanzle.com - Buyers and sellers are encouraged to connect, and it has easy eBay integration.

eBid.net - Broken down into country-specific mini-sites. You can also pay a one time fee as a seller, rather than a cut f your final sales.

ePier.com - Local listings for US cities are pretty good, but the fees involved are kind of high!

OnlineAuction.com - It's a simplified version of an auction site, and there are monthly fees of $8 for sellers.

Overstock.com - A place to sell overstocked goods, can be embedded into your own website.

There are a bunch more out there, so the list could get quite long.

Overall though, I think eBay is the one simply because they have the largest market share. In an auction, that is important because it's often down to the number of users you can reach in order to drive the price up!
