It sounds to me like Instagram is not recognizing your number for some reason.

There are a couple of things you can try out:

  1. Try adding the international dialing code to your cell phone number. For example, in the US it would be +1
  2. If, for some reason, Instagram is not able to send an automated text message to your number, try sending it to a friend or family member's phone.
  3. You could also sign up to a service like http://www.textnow.com/ and use a phone number generated through a site like that to receive your code.
  4. Finally, if you're still having problems, try tweeting at @InstagramHelp - they are there to help out in situations just like this.

This is a way for Instagram to hold accounts hostage that they do not want using their service.

I maintained a profile that flirted with their terms of service, more specifically, section 2 of their Basic Terms:

You may not post violent, nude, PARTIALLY nude, discriminatory, unlawful, infringing, hateful, pornographic or sexually SUGGESTIVE photos or other content via the Service. They deactivated my account without warning (which they CAN do as per their updated 2013 user agreement). With that, I took the time and wrote them an email outlining this and that I would be reporting all profiles similar to mine as if they kept those profiles, this would be highly prejudice.

I also even advised which ones I would be reporting and how they violate Basic Terms exactly as mine. I reported profiles similar to mine with MILLIONS of followers that violate their terms of service in the same fashion as my page did, which were Suicide Girls, TattooedChicks, DirtyMyndz, Playboy etc. I then proceeded to report all their coinciding profiles that they are based off ie: For Suicide Girls I reported a suicide girl's personal profile – Playboy, a bunny’s personal profile. All of which violated section 2 of their Basic Terms.

Guess what? ALL of those profiles STILL remain! Quelle surprise! They are smart however, they have not 'verified' these large corporate accounts such as Suicide Girls and Playboy as they would like to plead ignorance if such a case shall arise.

Now, I have created a new profile similar to the one I had before (to be clear, no images that would violate their terms have been uploaded yet AND the account is set to private). They asked me to verify via email (which is standard when setting up a new account) and then, the security code via text - which I DID both yesterday and all was well.

This morning, I woke up and tried to use the account and they have blocked me from doing anything and continue to ask me to verify my account at which time they will NOT send the code. I have tried multiple numbers and even the 'receive sms online' methods.

They FINALLY sent the code to one of my cell phones but to my delight, when I now try to use that phone number they sent the code to in their verification process, it tells me 'Sorry, please choose a different phone number'! Actually, ANY number I put in they tell me to use a different one... How coincidental.

I aware that I am only one small voice... Conspiracy or the PREJUDICE of Instagram? You decide

  1. Try using a different phone number to verify your account. Sometimes, there may be an issue with the number you are using, such as a typo or a problem with your mobile carrier.

  2. Contact Instagram's customer support. They may be able to assist you with resolving the issue and verifying your account. This can be done by going to the help center on the Instagram app or website, and selecting "Report a hacked account" or "Verification issue" from the list of options find how to get 1000k followers on instagram
