Exploding barrels.

Firstly, no matter whether you're in a military complex, a zombie-infested city, or just driving around a replica of downtown LA carjacking people, if you ever see a barrel lying around, you know that it will be filled with some sort of flammable material.

What are these barrels doing everywhere? And would one even explode as soon as you shot a single bullet at it?

Regenerative health

How many people do you know that would survive a bullet at point blank range without even falling over?

It really frustrates me when I've been chasing an enemy down for 15 minutes, finally rain down a barrage of bullets on them, only to see them regenerate back to full health after crouching down behind some boxes.

You sustain fatal wounds and all that happens is your breathing gets a little heavier?!?

Wouldn't it be cool if a direct shot to a limb with a shotgun actually meant the player lost that limb? What about blood loss from all those open wounds? Could that be incorporated into games?

Overly dramatic cut scenes

So I've been rushing armed guards, fighting off swarms of aliens, and dodging explosions left, right and center - then suddenly someone pulls a gun on me during a cut scene and the music turns dramatic.

In Far Cry 3, you somehow survive bullets, stab wounds and being set on fire by armed militia - and yet during one hostage cut scene, two men are able to restrain you and sever your finger and your character actually passes out. Talk about drama queen!

Play MLG. I think on cod its called hardcore- I don't remember but on those variants you only have on life and no over shields or juggernauts. It's more fun!

Haha Regenerative Health is a good one for sure, have you ever played the awesome Zombie apocalypse mod called Day-Z?  No regen health there, just one life, if you die, you lose everything and have to start again with nothing. It's brutal, but awesome.

My very first game I felt I was doing quite well, I'd managed to sneak through one zombie infested town, and gathered some supplies and an old rifle and thought I was doing pretty good as I'd heard how harsh the game could be.  I took refuge in the upper storey of a barn, in order to try and get the lay of the surrounding land, but a lapse of concentration meant that I tumbled out of the hatch, breaking both my legs.  With no splints or medkits to help myself I started the slow crawl through the grass in great pain toward the next building, until another human player came along and without saying a word shot me straight through the head.  Dead.  Reload and start again.

Ah Day-Z sounds pretty cool. Zombie games have always put me off for some reason (although I did play Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare).

There are save checkpoints or something right? Surely you can't be expected to complete the whole game on one life?!

I love your description of the gameplay btw. "Dead, reload, and start again" sounds like it should be on a bumper sticker or a T-shirt ;)

Nope there is no completing of the game, it's like an open world multiplayer thing, with no other objective than to try and stay alive. What I love about it is the fact that the stories and experiences are totally generated dynamically by the player behaviour.

I've heard about one guy who scoured the landscape for medical supplies and set up a little neutral hospital area up where people could go in peace and recover from their wounds, of bandits who worked together staking out a road and holding up any passersby, stripping them of all their gear before sending them on their way. Even a gang who found the wreckage of a helicopter, fixed it up by gathering spare parts and then flew around, rescuing people from Zombie hordes before choppering them out and dumping them on a island where there were no food or supplies so they'd all gradually starve to death (yep there's even the need to eat /sleep in it!)

It's a rough mod to Arma made/maintained by a single guy but a proper version is coming out and I guess that WILL have a 'point' , however I hope they keep the relentless brutality to it. I honestly believe we'll see more games encouraging player driven content/stories in this way, it adds a whole extra dimension to proceedings, every time you play, it's your story and yours alone.

Maybe I'll design that T-shirt!

I get annoyed by stupid gruff voices muttering dreadful one liners on FPS multiplayer like CoD i.e. "Lets lock and load ladies, its Go Time"

I mean really?! Enough to make me reach for the mute button.

My favorite classic clichés are exploding barrels, defensive unlimited ammo turret segments, platforming and regerating health (but I prefer picking up health, like in unreal). I hate the over used slow motion amd interactive cut scenes. Call of duty does this too much 😷 makes it unplayable to me
