The pros's are you can use your device using any carrier. (Sprint, at&t, verizon, etc)
This is a huge deal for some people and thus the reason why the look for unlocked devices.

The single bad thing about unlocking a device is that it affects the overall speed. Believe me I have done my homework on this and I have a 5 years experience in cellular repair. Don't believe me? Perform a simple test and you'll change your mind.

Download a single song, game or app. Time how long it takes to download and install.  Unlock the phone and do the exact same download. The delay in speed is very obvious. Each device differs to some extent but the fact of the matter is that unlocked devices are slower than default..

At some point or the other most of the Apple users have tried jailbreaking their iOS devices such as iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

Pros:

  • One can install apps that aren't available from the itunes App Store.
  • Enables using iPhone as a broadband modem to connect laptop with the internet.
  • Once you jailbreak, you get so many options to alter the look and feel of the device

Cons:

  • Jailbreaking absolutely makes your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch an easier
target for malware. It completely removes the walls that Apple built
into both iOS and the iTunes App Store.
  • You really don't know how secure your device is after it's been
jailbroken. That's because you've fundamentally changed the whole
    operating system, according to Armstrong.
  • Jailbroken apps are not always supported in new versions of the Apple
iOS, and each system update pushed out by Apple usually will erase
jailbreaks and apps that depend on them.
