Well, instead of being able to capture the moment with a simple click of a button, you had to describe what you saw, paint it and it come out not like the original, or hire a professional artist to come out and paint it. This made it very hard to take pictures with people in them because they had to stand around for a long time for the artist to get everything right. Today, cameras (especially digital) make everything more convenient and fast.
