UDP is an appropriate choice for many applications. It is used in streaming audio and video. During the transfer of these data types if the data is lost the data will do without the packets. UDP is not reliable and is considered a connectionless protocol. It does not require you to establish a connection with the host before exchanging data unlike TCP which is a connection-oriented protocol and is used in things like Telnet, FTP, and HTTP.
