The Nintendo Wii was originally called the Nintendo Revolution when it was first released as a prototype but upon the release date, the creators at Nintendo revealed that the new name for their new console was the ‘Nintendo Wii’. ‘Wii’ is pronounced ‘We’ so this personal pronoun is used to emphasize that this console was designed with the intention of including everybody into the gaming world. Games consoles are stereotypically thought of as computers for teenage boys who spend hours in imaginary worlds fighting monsters and enemies or racing their dream cars around the race track. The Nintendo Wii was designed to revolutionize games consoles to include the whole family into the gaming experience, hence the name ‘Wii’ or ‘We’.
Nintendo have released many games that bring families of all ages together in modern family games that they can enjoy playing together. The console encourages interactivity and the majority of games can include up to 4 players so families and friends can battle together or against each other in a relaxed and playful manner.
The wireless controllers ensure that the restriction of traditional video consoles has been abandoned and players are free to move around and perform the actions that their virtual player is doing on the screen.
The creators of Wii have also released games for a generation of women who would never normally play with video consoles and until the release of the Wii, probably never thought they would. The Wii Fit has been targeted towards middle aged women in the advertising campaigns, promoting a fun game that can help women to get fit, flexible and lose weight from the comfort of their own home. For women who are particularly uncomfortable about exercising in front of other people, the Wii Fit has been the perfect answer for them.

The wii got its name through the way it's controlled.  Wireless inter-interface the inter-interface meaning other hardware (i.e. The nunchuck) can connect to the main interface(the wiimote)    And this is a literal name for computer connected in this way.

I thought it might have been a Japanese translation, like "games" or "fun" or something. Didnt know it was wireless inter-interface.

Wii was originally said to have been spelled with the two I's because it visually represented two people playing together, the I symbol looking like a person in an abstract kind of way.

The original name "Revolution" was dropped because they wanted something more catchy and easy to remember in all languages and dialects where "Revolution" would apparently have been more of a mouthful for some peoples around the world.

I think it's a made up word. Because the Nintendo Wii is all about playing games with your friends and family it's probably a different spelling for the word "we".

The console was codenamed Revolution before it was finally named the Wii.

Why would the Japanese inventors use an English acronym? I don't know why you people even think Wii means We. English isn't the only language in the world you know...

Aside from representing us, Nintendo discussed that this spelling has a relatively universal pronounciation. Try saying "Gamecube" or "Nintendo 64" in other languages. Each one will sound way different. This new name reflects the aspirations that Nintendo has to bring players together through wifi playability on a global scale.
