The function of a modern Operating System is to allocate resources such as CPU time, Memory and Disk Space between processes running on the system, abstracting away from the underlying hardware of the system and allowing several processes to run simultaneously (multiprogramming). Exactly how this is achieved can vary largely between different operating systems and certainly has an impact on the overall performance.
