The most used search engines across the globe are Google, Yahoo, MSN, Askjeeves, AOL, and Microsoft, to name a few. Some of the other search engines include, Aliweb, WebCrawler, Infoseek, Lycos, Excite, Dogpile, Inktomi, Northern Light, AlltheWeb, Singingfish, Info.com, Quaero and Windows Live Search. There are different kinds of search engines namely, web search engine, enterprise search engine, personal search engines, mobile search engines, to name a few.
The first ever established search engine was Wandex and subsequently the Aliweb was established. Both were launched in the year 1993. The most popular search engine, Google was launched in the year 1998 and gained popularity around 2001. The most recent search engine is MSN, which is owned by Microsoft, it was launched in the year 2005. However, in 2006 it launched a very fresh search engine called - Windows Live Search. Askjeeves, now known as ask.com was launched in the February 2006.

From what I hear and personal experience. Google takes the number one spot with around 90% of the search traffic. Yahoo comes in second then MSN. All the rest are way behind.
