They do not sell that space, the only two things to ever be put there that were commercial products were Google Chrome (Google's Internet browser) and the Nexus One (a Sprint Android-OS phone). There have been others, including non-profits like the philanthropic response to the Haiti earthquake crisis, but those do not constitute advertising.
