Immediacy is the big advantage. In the days before television and radio when a big event occurred the newspapers would sometimes print an "extra edition". That is what was going on in the old movies where they would show a boy on the street corner shouting "Extra! Extra! Read all about it!". Also the recorded and live footage of events is something that is not practical to put in print.
