Technically, it is possible to track someone’s location by his or her cell phone. The most common ways of doing so are by subscribing to you network providers paid family tracking service, or to use Google’s free Latitude service. Whichever method you decide to use you will need to give consent from both yourself and the person you are trying to track. Remember that trying to track someone through their cell phone without his or her authorization is illegal and can be considered as stalking. Make sure that you have permission from the person you are trying to track before you begin to do so.

The best way to track people for free is via Google’s Latitude product. Using the Global Positioning System (GPS) in your mobile phone, Latitude allows you to see your friend’s current location and status messages and gives you the option to share yours with them. This location sharing cannot take place until both you and your friend have agreed to give each other your information. It is possible to set your location to city-level if you want more privacy and you have the options to set, share or hide your location completely.

In order to sign up for Google’s Latitude service to need to access the website via google.com/latitude on your mobile phone or computer. If you are using the product on your cell phone, you will need to download the latest version of Google Maps. Within this app you can then select to ‘Join Latitude’. Latitude will ask for your google account (it is simple to set one up if you don’t have one) and you can then register to show your location. The latitude app on your phone has a tab that allows you to invite your friends. This invite will send an email to the requested contact and ask them to sign up for the service too. Once you and your friend are set up to share location information on Latitude, the GPS will highlight you both on the map. This will then allow you to track your friend’s location.

Unless you have an access or at least had one time physical access to the target phone, it's possible using some of these apps. These are commercial apps, designed officially for parental control, and for spouse spying - unofficially. However you need to understand, that it's illegal in most cases to track another persons phone without their consent.

There's two ways it can be done.

First is via GPS - either built into the device or as an add-on. Add-ons are usually a bad idea as they have to be internally added, which involves micro-screwdrivers and a magnifying apparatus. That also voids the warranty as it's an unauthorized modification - unless you have a location nearby with repair authorized certification from that manufacturer.

Another way is to subscribe to what's called "Mapping" by the service provider. The cost of this can be anywhere from $4.99 per month on up to $19.99.

Hope this helps!
