How Do You Withhold Your Telephone Number?

The main way to withhold your number in the UK is to press 141 before you dial the number. This means that any person who you wish to call up, regardless of whether you are calling a local or international number, will not see your number on their phone, instead they will see either 'private' or 'withheld'.

Some handsets also offer a service which allows you to hide your ID. There might be a button or a setting on your cordless phone which should work the same way as the previous example given above.

In the US you can do this by using *67 or you can even get in touch with your local network supplier who may be able to offer you other alternatives in order to withhold your number.

By going 'ex-directory' you will be able to protect your number from unwanted callers. It is essential if you do this that you only give your number out to people who you know and trust. This can be family, friends or even business colleagues if you do not want your number getting in the wrong hands.

If you have had an ex-girlfriend or had a family row with someone in particular who in the past tended to call you often , by calling up your network supplier to get your number private it can save you a lot of hassle and stress when it comes to picking up the phone.

The normal function with a landline phone is to dial 141 before the actual number. This will mean your number comes up as "Private" or "Withheld" to the person you are calling.

If you are calling from your mobile, you should be able to disguise your number by choosing "Hide my ID" on your handset. Obviously this function will vary from model to model - check your manual for full information on this.

Dial 141 then follow with your number. Dialling your home phone or mobile this way can be checked by dialling 1471 on the phone you rang. It should tell you the caller has witheld their number.

You still put 141 before the number ... Try it out on your home phone ... Don't answer it (obviously) ... Then dial 1471 on your home phone to prove that it has worked
