I just bought the Samsung Gravity 2, and came across the same issue. I've actually found someone who knows a way around it! Check it out:

-Go to the settings menu
-personalize
-sound settings
-hit the top left button on your keypad, it says options
-edit
-go to message tab
-go down to message alert tone
-use the top left key on your keypad to once again click options
-change
-click use my alert tone
-go where you would to find your music, and choose a ringtone
-click melody for the message alert

HURRAH!

Well for starters you  have to have a mini sd card for your phone.
All I did was got to myxer.com find the song you want and save it to your pc because it wont sent it right to your phone ITS STUPID. But anyways after you save it to your pc put your card into the slot on the pc when it opens drag the ringtone in the music folder. Put the sd card in your phone go to menu fun & Apps  files music  and it should be in there hit options and set as ringtone and thats it.
Hopefully it works for you guys. I have a problem with setting a song for a message it wont let me do that. And also it wont let me send tone messages it will only let you bluetooth it which it don't make since.

Go to the message then After the song plays hit the More Option scroll down to Save Attachment Save it. Then go to your menu Scroll over 1 Then to Music Player Then the More Option Again then Set As Ringtone and there you have it.  I have a Gravity-T Not sure if it will work for the others Sorry.            Hope this Helped. Good luck.

You can go to settings: Sound profiles and then click the >> button by Normal.  Then select the drop down menu where it says Call and change it to Message then select Message alert tone.  Next select Sounds from the bottom center of the screen and you can find your ringtone in there (you may have to hit the curvy up arrow to get to the ringtone file).  The issue I have is that you cannot set different ringtones for different contacts for the text message ringtones. It really sucks!

I just got the phone and was having the same problem. I went to T-mobile and asked. I was told that you can't get custom tones for text. You can only use the 4 the have pre loaded. :(

Untrue.  You have to go into your media files, find the tone you want to use for texts, click options, select set as, then select message tone

You can't set ringtones as text messaging tones no matter what these fools say... You can only use the ringers that are alreasy preloaded on the phone. I have had my phone for 2 years and I have asked everyone...went to the t-mobile store and apprently googled it and nothing works... You just have  to work with the tones that are already on the fone....I know it sucks but after you get used to it it is fine... And I think that iet is funny cause when you are at the store and you hear that cheesy ringtone  you know that other people have the same fone as you and are going through the same pain
