In the world of computer technology, you will quite often hear the words, software and hardware.

Peopleware is just another term that is used in the aspects of computer technology. It may not be spoken of as frequently as hardware or software but it is still just as important. Hardware is the physical components of a computer, for example; the hard drive, CD drive, motherboards and CPU (Central Processing Unit) and software being the programs, such as Internet browsers, media players and the data. This is what is installed in the computer. Computers are great machines but are pretty useless without people to press the right buttons.

The term peopleware covers many aspects in the computer community, for example;

• Teamwork
• Organizational skills
• People management
• Development of productive teams
• Monitoring human competencies

For instance if a company needed to build a whole new computer system, the first thing they would invest in would be an experienced IT team. This team would be needed to program information into the computer to basically tell it what to do, what is needed and to regularly test it throughout the process. The team would need to work well together and be organized and productive.

The word "peopleware" was a new word to the English language in the 70s and became more popular after the publication "Peopleware: Productive Projects
and Teams" by Tom DeMarco and Timothy Lister was published in 1987. This is just one of many publications that cover the aspects of peopleware.

So basically, where people are needed in any area of the computer technology industry, this is where you will hear the word "peopleware".

Peopleware is a term used to refer to one of the three core
aspects of computer technology: hardware,
software, and peopleware. Peopleware can refer
to anything that has to do with the role of people in the development or
use of computer software and hardware systems, including such issues as
developer productivity, teamwork, group dynamics, the psychology of
programming, project management, organizational factors, human interface
